There are many benefits that come with including plants in your living space. With their capability to give a home a splash of colour while keeping the overall palette neutral, as well as making a room feel more ‘alive’, there is a reason as to why the usage of plants in home design is highly lauded by both interior designers and homeowners alike.
Humans and plants have shared a long standing relationship, with plants shaping our societies for thousands of years by providing us with food, shelter, clothing and medicines.
Today, we pay homage to this relationship by incorporating plants into our living spaces, akin to how the first humans used to live. However, beyond their aesthetics, there are other tangible benefits to keeping plants in your home - particularly health benefits. Today, we dive into 5 plants that 'work' for you, keeping your home clean, healthy and green.
Snake Plant
Scientific Name: Dracaena Trifasciata
Size: Typically 15-60cm when grown indoors
Maintenance level: Very Low
The Dracaena Trifasciata, more commonly known as the snake plant is one of the most popular plants kept in homes due to its unique looks and reputation for being one of the hardiest plants on the planet.
Originating from West Africa, the snake plant is drought resistant, only requiring moderate watering when the soil is dry to the touch, being able to go without water for as long as weeks at a time. They are also highly adaptable to varied lighting conditions, able to grow in direct sunlight as well as in shade.
The snake plant is renowned for its air-filtering and oxygen producing properties, being able to do so even at night, making them a staple for the bedroom. They also remove toxic pollutants, which solidify them as one of the best and hardest working plants you can keep in your home.
Rubber Plant
Scientific Name: Ficus Elastica
Size: Can grow up to 2m
Maintenance level: Medium-low
The Ficus Elastica, known to us as the rubber fig or rubber plant is an evergreen tropical tree known for its beautiful broad leaves possessing dark red and burgundy hues. Being a tree, this plant has potential to grow vertically up to 2 metres indoors, but you can easily prune it down to a manageable size for your home.
Being a tropical plant, the rubber plant has largely adapted to live in Singapore’s climate, requiring watering only once every two weeks. However, this plant does require a good amount of sunlight, preferring strong but indirect or diffused sunlight for 6-8 hours daily.
The rubber plant’s broad leaves work well in removing bacteria and various toxins from a room, as well as being a great fit for people with allergies - as long as you avoid the sap of the plant. Due to its exotic looks and health properties, the rubber plant is highly recommended for any home.
Spider Plant
Scientific Name: Chlorophytum Comosum
Size: Leaves grow to around 60cm
Maintenance level: Low
Chlorophytum Comosum, also known as the spider plant or spider ivy gets its name from its long bladed leaves which grow long and arch over the pot. This makes them a fantastic hanging plant, and have been kept in homes since the Victorian era.
Requiring minimal care, being content with being placed in a well lit area and being watered only when the soil was dry, the spider plant has grown in popularity due to its hardiness and unique looks.
The spider plant can be propagated via plantlets known as spiderettes, a reward for showing your spider plant love and care.
Similarly to the snake plant, the spider plant is one of the hardest working air purifying plants out there, making an excellent addition to any home.
Aloe Vera Plant
Scientific Name: Aloe Barbadensis Miller
Size: 30-60cm commonly
Maintenance Level: Medium-Low
Aloe Vera is a succulent plant that is commonly known for its soothing medicinal properties, such as curing infections and other skin issues such as sunburns. Aloe vera is easy to care for and does well in partial lighting conditions with moderate watering, making a great addition to freshen up a bathroom.
Aloe vera’s healing properties makes it come in handy for emergency burns and bites and looks killer when it receives the adequate amount of lighting.
Photos Ivy
Scientific Name: Epipremnum Aureum
Size: Vines can grow up to 3m
Maintenance level: Low
The photos or devil’s ivy is a creeper that is extremely easy to care for while serving as an air purifier, being able to filter gaseous toxins such as formaldehyde from the air.
This ivy comes in a few colours, namely jade green, lime-green (neon) and marble queen (deep green and white). Combined with its unique crawler type of growth, allowing you to let them grow on walls and windows, they go a long way towards making a room look vivid and alive.
This hardy creeper requires partial sunlight to prevent the leaves from burning, and can be watered every 1-2 weeks. While this rapidly growing ivy may reach lengths of 3 metres, they are relatively easy to prune to fit the aesthetics of your home.
